Elephants have tusks.

These tusks are not magical.

They have no power
to do anything
unless attached to the biological
organism which possess
them.

Tusks can be used carelessly,
cruelly,
violently,
or
beautifully,
with the outcome dependent
on the organism wielding them.

Tusks are a defense
in a wild world
where poachers can kill you
because ivory has value
for properties it doesn’t posses
and for the status it gives
over a gaggle of teeth
that once belonged to a cornerstone member
of a cornerstone species killed

for it’s teeth called ‘tusks’.

Elephants have tusks.
Leave their tusks alone.

Ivory is a completely unnecessary
luxury.

It is cruel,
it is violent.

Thousands of years ago,
the argument would be
different.

But today ain’t the same
and making beautifully things
out of elephant tusks
ain’t a beautiful thing.

Elephants have tusks
and memory-dense brains.

Never forget.

An elephant had tusks
yesterday.
